Car hire at Dalaman Airport (DLM) isn’t really about Dalaman itself. The town doesn’t hold much appeal for visitors — it’s a small working hub rather than a resort. What matters is that DLM serves as the main gateway to the entire south-west coast: Sarıgerme is just 12 km away, Göcek 25, Dalyan 25, Fethiye 50, Ölüdeniz 65, Marmaris 95, Kalkan 125 and Kaş 150 kilometres.
“Nine out of ten people landing at DLM pick up a car simply to leave. Even the UK charter flights empty straight out of the terminal and head for the coast — hardly anyone stays in Dalaman.”
DLM is the primary airport for British charter traffic: Jet2, TUI and easyJet fly here from April through October, with the busiest months being July and August. From November to March most local operators close, though the big chains remain open with smaller fleets.
“Dalaman in winter feels like a different place altogether. The charters stop, the resorts quieten down and prices drop by 30–50 %. It’s worth taking a slightly larger car — the south-west coast often sees rain at this time of year.”
“The golden rule at DLM: at the big-name desks be ready for upsell attempts and a very thorough damage check. Booking through aggregators with local operators tends to feel calmer.”
Dalaman Mietwagenpreise
Of all the Turkish airports, Dalaman offers the most natural starting point for the classic drive along the Lycian coast. The journey to Antalya is around 300 km and comfortably done in 5–7 days with stops. One-way drop-off at AYT costs €80–180.
“The Lycian Way features some of the most beautiful coastal driving in Turkey. The D400 stretch between Kalkan and Kemer is widely regarded as one of the finest sea-road routes anywhere, and it’s easy to see why.”
A typical week looks like this: DLM → Fethiye (Saklıkent) → Ölüdeniz (paragliding) → Kalkan (sunset from a terrace) → Kaş (Greek islands on the horizon) → Demre (Church of St Nicholas) → Olympos (the eternal flames of the Chimaera) → Antalya (Kaleiçi old town). You’ll spend just one or two hours behind the wheel each day, leaving plenty of time for the sights and beaches.
“Five to seven days feels about right. Shorter and the route becomes a rush; longer and you grow tired of repacking every other evening.”
Choose a compact or mid-range car with an automatic gearbox. The D400 has plenty of switchbacks, long climbs and hairpin bends — a manual can be tiring on the clutch leg in the Taurus mountains. The most demanding sections are Kalkan–Kaş, Kaş–Demre and Olympos–Antalya.
“The single best piece of advice for the Lycian Way: take an automatic. On a manual you spend more time watching the gear lever than enjoying the sea views.”

How to handle the return at DLM
Among British travellers Dalaman has gained a certain reputation for return-day surprises. In practice things are usually smoother than the forums suggest, but it still pays to arrive prepared. A few straightforward steps bring the risk almost to zero.
At pickup
Photograph the car from every angle with location and timestamp visible: all four sides of the bodywork, wheels, bumpers, glass, undercarriage, interior and the dashboard showing the fuel level. Note any existing damage on the inspection sheet before you drive away. Never sign without completing a full walk-around.
“The best Dalaman pickup tip: take forensic-level photos. Thirty or forty timestamped pictures at collection, and disputes at return almost never happen.”
At return and the fuel question
Return the car in daylight and take your time. Repeat the same set of photographs. A Full-to-Full contract is generally fairer than Full-to-Empty: photograph the fuel gauge on arrival. If the contract states a full tank but the car is only three-quarters full, ask for the paperwork to be corrected before leaving. Refuel at the Opet station five minutes from DLM.
“A third-party excess waiver acts as your safety net. The hire company holds the deposit, you resolve any issue with them, then reclaim through your own policy.”
Häufige Fragen
Kalkan is about an hour from Fethiye (60 km). Kaş is 1.5 hours (110 km). Patara is 2 hours (130 km). All on the scenic stretch of the D400 with switchbacks and viewpoints. Day trips work best with an early start, before the oncoming traffic gets dense.
About 50 km and 50–60 minutes on a high-quality road. The most common DLM scenario: arrive, collect the car, drive to the hotel in Fethiye or Ölüdeniz. The shuttle transfer with stopovers takes longer and typically costs more than the self-drive option.
About 70 km and 1 hour 10 minutes. The route runs through Fethiye. The road is high quality, no difficult switchbacks. The 'arrive at DLM, take the car, drive to the Ölüdeniz hotel' pattern is the standard route and most of our Ölüdeniz clients use exactly this approach.
Yes — hotel delivery is a much-used service in this region. The car can come from DLM directly to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Göcek or Sarıgerme and be collected from the same point at the end of the rental. Convenient when the first days at the hotel don't need a car.
Yes — dropping off in Bodrum, Antalya, Izmir or Istanbul is standard with most suppliers. The relocation fee depends on distance: from $150–200 for Dalaman–Bodrum, from $200–300 for Dalaman–Antalya. Cars with this option go faster in summer, so book ahead.
The paragliding landing zones sit right alongside the beach, and pilots come down within metres of the road. On the beach-adjacent stretches drive steadily and be ready for unexpected pedestrian movement from people carrying folded paragliders. It's a regular part of the local rhythm.
In Dalaman, almost always — yes. It's an unusual airport: the town itself isn't a destination, and most travellers head straight to Fethiye, Ölüdeniz or Kaş. So the car is normally taken for the full trip. The 'one to three days for outings' pattern that works on the Mediterranean coast is rare in Dalaman.
Most resort towns of the region have straightforward parking — hotels include it free, and street spaces are usually available. It gets harder in high season in Fethiye itself, at Çalış beach and in Ölüdeniz: arrive earlier in the day or head straight for a paid car park. Seafront spaces fill up fast.
There are plenty of stations between Fethiye and Kaş, but fewer between Kaş and Patara. Refilling earlier is sensible, particularly if a Patara day starts early. Diesel is usually the more economical choice on this route — lower price per kilometre and lower consumption.
No — a standard compact or saloon with an automatic gearbox is enough for the D400. A crossover is more comfortable on the switchback sections, but on the main coastal stretch the difference isn't critical. A minivan is only needed for a larger group. For Lycian Way trekking, the car stays at the trailhead.
DLM has a strongly seasonal flight pattern — most routes are summer services. Car hire here is busiest from May to October, peaking in July and August. Winter sees DLM operating on a reduced schedule and the rental fleet contracts in step. For summer trips, booking the car alongside the flight locks in stock.
UK guidance recommends carrying an International Driving Permit alongside the domestic licence as a precaution, although it isn't strictly required for short visits. Most UK and EU licences are accepted by Turkish suppliers on their own. Worth carrying for licences in non-Latin scripts.
