With your own car, Phuket opens up. From Nai Harn at the southern tip to Mai Khao in the north is 50 km of mountain roads with bends and views over the Andaman Sea. The cashmere-soft beaches of Surin and Bang Tao, the food in Phuket Town, the sunsets at Promthep Cape — all become accessible without paying for a transfer every time.
Guests often arrive planning to settle into one beach for the week. Two days in, they take a car Two days in, they take a car — because Nai Harn and Rawai are ten minutes away through the hills, whereas the bus takes forty minutes via Phuket Town.
Phuket airport (HKT) sits in the north of the island. From there the road runs down the west coast through Bang Tao, Laguna and Surin — about an hour to Patong, an hour and a half to the southernmost point. Most owners meet at the terminal exit with a name board, no transfers to remote car parks.
When a first-time driver heads from the airport down to the south, we suggest taking it slowly. The mountain stretch from Kamala to Patong is pretty but steep and full of hairpins. Switch on the cruise control and enjoy it; no one's giving prizes for fast lap times.
Safety and pickup points on the island
Phuket has a mixed reputation as a rental market. There are honest family-run businesses, but also smaller outfits near the beaches known for tales of "new" damage on return and held deposits. Protection is simple and works: video the car at pickup, video again at drop-off, never leave your passport, and any deposit goes by cash, card or transfer.
There are essentially three pickup zones on Phuket: HKT airport (the largest concentration of owners), hotels in Patong, Karon and Bang Tao (free delivery is standard), and Phuket Town (for guests staying in the historic centre). Delivery from the airport down to the southern beaches takes around 50 minutes — book it in advance.
Petrol stations are plentiful: PTT and Bangchak run along the main 402 road from the Sarasin bridge to Phuket Town, and along the west coast. In the south, towards Nai Harn, stations are sparser — head out on a full tank, especially for evening drives.

Am Anfang lief es gut, sie verlängerten sogar unseren Mietvertrag um einen Tag. Am Ende kam es jedoch zu einer unangenehmen Situation. Man teilte uns mit, dass wir das Auto abstellen und die Schlüssel auf das Rad legen müssten, anstatt das Auto persönlich zu übergeben. Wir hatten eine Kaution von 20.000 Rubel hinterlegt. Einige Tage später wurde uns mitgeteilt, dass das Auto einen Kratzer an der Unterseite hatte. Der Kratzer ist ziemlich auffällig, wenn er von uns verursacht worden wäre, hätten wir ihn auf jeden Fall gespürt oder bemerkt. Infolgedessen wurden uns 10.000 Rubel von der Kaution abgezogen. Anscheinend ist das nicht das erste Mal, dass so etwas passiert, und den Kunden wird regelmäßig derselbe Kratzer in Rechnung gestellt.

Sarasin bridge — onwards to mainland
Most owners on Phuket allow the car to cross to the mainland — into Krabi, Phang Nga, Khao Lak or Trang — at no extra charge. The only condition is to mention the route at pickup. The insurance covers the entire journey, the same way it does on the island.

When you collect and return the car, film the entire body, alloys, windscreen and the underside on the driver's side. Five minutes of effort separates a smooth drop-off from disputed deductions. Reputable owners will ask you to do this themselves.

Hotel delivery is standard practice
Within Phuket (Patong, Karon, Kata, Bang Tao, Rawai) most owners deliver the car to your hotel for free or for $5–10. Helpful if you're landing late or planning a couple of days without the car before the active part of the holiday begins.
Routes — around the island and beyond the bridge
Around the island — beaches and viewpoints
Phuket's main road, the 402, runs north to south through Phuket Town, with branches off to the west-coast beaches: Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Harn. A full loop around the island is around 100 km and can be done in a day. Don't skip the Karon Viewpoint between Karon and Nai Harn — the most famous sunset spot.
Phuket's most underrated route is the north coast. From Mai Khao through Sirinat national park to Bang Tao is just 30 km and almost car-free. The opposite of Patong — wide beaches, quiet, and shaded hollows between the casuarina roots.
To the mainland — Phang Nga and Krabi
From HKT airport across the Sarasin bridge to Phang Nga is 40 minutes. Phang Nga Bay with its James Bond limestone stacks, mangrove forests and the quiet beaches of Natai. Another 1.5 hours to Krabi with Railay beach and Ao Nang. Realistic as a day trip; comfortable as two or three days.
Further south — Trang, Satun, Tarutao
From Krabi you can carry on south — Trang with caves and the coffee houses of Koh Yao, Satun with the Tarutao and Lipe islands. Note: the car can't be taken to Lipe or Koh Lanta (the ferries don't carry cars). Leave it at the Ao Nang or Pak Meng pier and continue by boat.
Parking at the Ao Nang Princess pier for a Koh Lanta trip is around $3 a day. Many guests worry about leaving the car "on the island" overnight, but there's usually a manned car park with cameras nearby. We've never had an incident across multiple seasons.

Yes, across the Sarasin bridge — most owners include this in the standard terms with no extra charge. Mention at pickup that you're planning Krabi or Phang Nga. The insurance covers the whole of Thailand. It's one of Phuket's main advantages — you effectively get access to the entire southern coast.
At most popular beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Harn, Kamala) there are paid parking strips at $1–1.50 per day with a local attendant. Free parking is available at the less-visited beaches: Mai Khao, Sirinat, Mai Thon. Hotel car parks are usually free for guests; restaurants on production of a receipt.
In terms of road access and reaching the rest of the island, Bang Tao and Karon are the most convenient. Quick to the airport, 20–30 minutes to the southern beaches and Phuket Town, parking at most hotels. Patong has plenty of options but the heaviest traffic. Nai Harn is quiet and scenic, but further from everywhere else.
Yes, and it's one of the main reasons to take a car on Phuket. Phang Nga is 1.5 hours, Krabi 2.5 hours, Railay and Ao Nang 3 hours. Roads are surfaced, and the navigation is reliable. Petrol on the mainland is cheaper than on the island — refuel after the bridge.
The main complaints concern smaller outfits along Bangla Road in Patong, unbranded rentals near Kata and Karon beaches, and Thai private operators with no website. From HKT to Patong — around 50 minutes via the west coast or 40 minutes through the 402. To Nai Harn (the southern tip) — 1 hour 20 minutes. To Bang Tao — 25 minutes. To Phuket Town — 35 minutes. Add 20–30 minutes during rainy-season traffic in Patong.
For the hilly roads (Kamala–Patong, Chalong–Rawai), a car with a 1.5-litre or larger engine is more comfortable. Toyota Vios, Honda City and Mazda 2 cope well. For lots of southern and mountain driving, a Honda HR-V, Yaris Cross or Mitsubishi Xpander handles better. 1.2-litre models need sport-mode shifts on the climbs.
Leave it at the pier in a manned car park. The Ao Nang pier (for Koh Lanta) and Rassada pier in Phuket (for Koh Phi Phi) have car parks at $3–5 a day. Don't leave anything in the boot, take valuables with you, and let the owner know the car will sit at the pier for a few days.
At hotels with their own car parks, yes. At beach car parks with an attendant, yes — but don't leave anything valuable in the cabin. Street overnight parking in Patong is not recommended: minor damage from tuk-tuks and scooters happens, and occasional break-in attempts. A hotel with covered parking is the safest option.
Yes, with some owners — typically an extra $30–60 depending on the drop-off point (KBV airport or Ao Nang). Check at booking, not all owners offer this. Alternative: drop at HKT and pick up a fresh car in Krabi — sometimes cheaper than the one-way fee.
