Car hire in Turkey lets you experience the country at your own pace. No shuttles, no fixed schedules — just you, the road, and the freedom to stop wherever the view takes you. Turkey is vast, the roads are generally good, and many of the highlights, from the Lycian coast to Cappadocia, are only a few hours’ drive from the airport.
For most of our British and European guests the car quickly becomes part of the holiday. A few days away from the all-inclusive to visit Pamukkale or Saklıkent Gorge, a relaxed fortnight exploring the coast between Antalya and Kaş, or a spontaneous city break in the shoulder season when prices are kinder.

Payment is refreshingly straightforward. Visa, Mastercard, contactless and debit cards are widely accepted. Credit cards are only essential with the big international brands; our local suppliers are happy with cash in EUR, USD or Turkish lira. Most guests pay a small online deposit of 15–20% to secure the car and settle the balance on arrival.

The fleet starts with the ever-present Fiat Egea and goes up to spacious eight-seater minivans for families. Most vehicles are 2020 models or newer.
What you need to hire a car in Turkey
You’ll need a passport with the entry stamp and a valid driving licence. EU and EEA licences are accepted as they are. UK licences are fine for tourist stays, though the UK government recommends carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well — especially if you have an older paper licence or plan a longer trip. It’s quick and inexpensive to get.

Minimum age is 21 with at least two years’ experience. Premium cars, 4×4s and minivans are usually available from 25. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a young driver fee of around $10 per day.
Payment works well for European guests. The online deposit accepts Visa, Mastercard, contactless and most debit cards. On collection, local suppliers take cash in EUR, USD or lira; international brands still require a credit card in the driver’s name.

Always check the car against your voucher before driving off: model, year, gearbox and fuel type. In peak season “same class” substitutions can happen.

How much car hire in Turkey costs
Prices vary with the season. In quieter months a Fiat Egea starts from $8–10 a day for manual and $12–15 for automatic. Mid-range cars (Renault Megane, Hyundai i30) are $12–20, while family minivans begin at $60–80.
In high season (June to September) expect roughly three times the price: Egea from $35, mid-range $45–55, minivans $120–180. On the coast in July and August the best cars disappear fast, so hiring in Bodrum or Antalya is best done well in advance.

The voucher price already includes mandatory third-party insurance, basic CDW, airport fee, and any optional extras you chose. Tolls and fines are charged afterwards with a modest admin fee.

Cash deposits range from about $100 for an economy car to $500 for a large minivan. Several suppliers also offer zero-deposit options when you choose Full Coverage.

hatte ein anderes Auto, einen Hyundai. Im Großen und Ganzen war alles in Ordnung. Aber der Mann, der uns abholte, hatte kein Wechselgeld, und ich musste mehrmals nachsehen, um Geld zu wechseln. Am Ende musste ich zurück zum Flughafen und mich in die Warteschlange für die Kontrolle stellen. Gleichzeitig hatte ich den Betrag ohne Wechselgeld minus tausend Rubel, wir boten an, es später zu bezahlen, er war nicht einverstanden. Es dauerte wahrscheinlich eine Stunde, um es zu finden.

Es war durchschnittlich. Das Auto war super schmutzig, musste den Vermieter zum Hotel kommen lassen und es am nächsten Tag in die Waschanlage bringen. Außerdem war es in ziemlich schlechtem Zustand.

Lieferung und Rückgabe des Autos in kürzester Zeit. Transfer zum/vom Flughafen ohne Probleme. Ich habe vor Ort mit der Russian Union Pay Card von Gazprombank bezahlt.

Wir bestellten Fiat Agea mit Automatik, Diesel (was uns sehr wichtig war) und bei der Anmeldung wählten wir den Treffpunkt am Flughafen mit einem Schild. Wir wurden nicht mit einem Schild gewartet, wir mussten warten, nachdem wir den Flughafen verlassen hatten. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass uns das sehr gestört hat, aber es hat das Gefühl des Wartens ein wenig getrübt. Es war gut, dass wir eine türkische SIM-Karte hatten und meine Frau eine englische SIM-Karte, so dass wir einfach die Person anrufen konnten, die das Auto abholen sollte, und warteten. Dann kam ein Mitarbeiter der Firma mit einem Megan-Benzinwagen zu uns. Man sagte uns, dass der Fiat leider in Reparatur sei und sie ihn nicht herausgeben könnten, aber für den gleichen Preis seien sie bereit, uns ein Auto höherer Klasse und zum gleichen Preis zu geben - einen Renaut Megan. Wir waren ein wenig beunruhigt, denn auf der Website steht, dass sie ein analoges Auto geben können, aber hier ist es direkt höher eingestuft. Und das aus gutem Grund. Wir fingen an zu erklären, dass wir wirklich einen Diesel wollten und wir sind nicht wirklich besorgt über die Tatsache, dass die Klasse höher oder die gleiche ist. Es stellte sich heraus, dass sie eine andere Option Ford Focus auf Diesel, analog Fiat (hier wurde es ein wenig seltsam, warum wir es nicht sofort anbieten))). Am Ende einigten wir uns darauf, zu ihrer Firma zu gehen und an Ort und Stelle eines der 2 Autos zu wählen, das uns mehr gefallen wird und Gott sei Dank nicht umsonst. Wie sich herausstellte, hatte der Megane ein Loch in der Scheibenwaschanlage und es lief einfach Wasser aus. Am Ende haben wir den Ford genommen und sind nicht leer ausgegangen. Im Rest der Wahrheit ohne Beanstandungen, die Jungs waren in Kontakt, da wir irgendeinen Fehler auf dem Armaturenbrett festgestellt hatten, schrieben sie sofort zurück. Das alles in Ordnung ist, fahren Sie und machen Sie sich keine Sorgen. Wir sind viel gefahren, auch Kapaddokia und Pamukkale, es gibt keine Fragen zum Auto, es hat einwandfrei funktioniert, der Dieselmotor ist wirklich eine Bombe, es hatte eine kleine Menge an Futter. Als wir das Auto übergeben haben, sind wir auch in den Salon gegangen, die Jungs haben sich das Auto kurz angeschaut und es wie erwartet zum Flughafen gefahren. Die Kaution wurde zurückerstattet. Im Großen und Ganzen wäre alles in Ordnung, wenn da nicht die Sache mit der Waschmaschine wäre, wegen der wir immer noch das Gefühl haben, dass wir schummeln wollten.

Der Fahrer hatte 30 min Verspätung, ich war mit einem Kind draußen, es regnete und war kalt, und danach konnte man mich am Flughafen nicht finden, und am Ende bekam ich die alten Dollars zurück und nicht meine neuen !!!! Sie nehmen nicht überall die alten.

Fiat Egea Multijet in der Türkei
Wir waren sehr unzufrieden, nicht so sehr mit dem Auto, sondern mit Herrn Hüseyin, der ein Vertreter der Firma ist, die das Auto vor Ort (Flughafen Izmir) zur Verfügung stellt. Wir sind von Antalya aus geflogen und haben dies bei der Buchung angegeben, einschließlich der Flugnummer. Natürlich kamen wir am Inlandsterminal an. Hüseyin kam, um uns im internationalen Terminal abzuholen. Das Ergebnis: unnötige Verhandlungen und verlorene Zeit. Er brachte uns nicht zum Parkplatz des Vermieters, sondern zu einem Wohnhaus. Auch hatte er kein Terminal für die Zahlung per Bankkarte, obwohl in den Mietbedingungen auf der Website eine solche Möglichkeit war. Dann nahm er von uns extra 10 Euro für die Überfahrt auf mautpflichtigen Autobahnen, wobei er uns erklärte, dass das Auto einen eingebauten Transponder für die automatische Zahlung hat und dass der Betrag davon abgezogen wird und das war's dann auch schon. Es gab keine Informationen über diese Maut auf der Website bei der Buchung. Das Auto war völlig demoliert. Wir haben 26 Fotos von den Schäden gemacht, um den aktuellen Zustand des Autos festzuhalten. Aber es schien zu fahren, und die Zeit war schade, so dass wir beschlossen, die angebotene Kopie zu nehmen. Aber noch am selben Tag bemerkten wir, wie abgewischt das Lenkrad und der Schalthebel waren. Laut Vertrag sollte das Auto im Jahr 2022 hergestellt werden, aber wir nahmen es im Januar 2024. So kann ein Auto nach 2 Jahren Gebrauch nicht aussehen. Wir haben uns das technische Gutachten angesehen, und da steht, dass das Auto nicht 2022, sondern 2018 hergestellt wurde. Es ist also ein anderes Auto als das, das wir bestellt haben, obwohl es das gleiche Modell ist. Der Kilometerstand wurde mit etwa 97000 Kilometern angegeben, aber so ein abgewischtes Lenkrad und ein abgewischter Schalthebel sagten uns, dass das Auto weit über 150000 km gelaufen war. Als wir Hussain darauf ansprachen, sagte er nur, als ob nichts passiert wäre, dass das Auto von 2022 gerade repariert würde und er keine Rabatte für ein älteres und ramponiertes Auto gewähren oder es austauschen könne. Bei normalen Autovermietungen gibt es eine Regel, nach der, wenn das bestellte Auto aus irgendwelchen Gründen nicht verfügbar ist, die Kunden ein ähnliches oder besseres, aber niemals ein schlechteres bekommen, wie wir es bekommen haben. Und Husein hat das nicht im Voraus gesagt, sondern versucht, es zu verbergen. Auch stellten wir mit der Zeit fest, dass die Wischerblätter und die linke Scheibenwaschanlage im Auto nicht funktionierten. Zum Glück konnte wenigstens dies nach einem Gespräch mit Hussein behoben werden, aber dafür mussten wir selbst zu einem bestimmten Autoservice fahren und erneut unsere Urlaubszeit aufwenden. Generell können wir den Umgang mit diesem Autoanbieter (Hussein) und seiner Firma nicht empfehlen.

Hyundai i20 in der Türkei
Anstelle eines Hyundai bekamen wir einen Renault, was in Ordnung war. Das Auto ist sicherlich kein Mercedes oder gar ein Skoda, aber es war besser als ein Taxi oder ein Bus. Bequemes Treffen am Flughafen alles klar nach dem Vertrag ohne Betrug und so auf alle Fragen beantwortet Telefon zu verbinden geholfen! Ein riesiger Nachteil ist es, ein Auto mit einem leeren Tank so sich selbst und den Leuten in einem fremden Land zu geben (vor allem wenn man die französische Autoindustrie kennt, wenn die Glühbirne an ist, kann das Benzin in 5 km ausgehen, es ist kein deutsches, mit dem man noch 50-60 km durch die Stadt fahren kann, bevor es aufsteht). Wenn man das örtliche Klima kennt, kann man wie die Einheimischen die Windschutzscheibe mit einer Folie abdecken, denn bei 45⁰ unter der Sonne kann man das Lenkrad nicht mitnehmen). Sie können auch ein Handy-Ladegerät über den Zigarettenanzünder anschließen. Sie vermieten Autos an Russen, diese Mini-Dinger sind schon in allen Ländern durchdacht. Schauen Sie, wie Fahrräder von Besitzern aus der GUS mit einem Ladegerät mit einer Abdeckung auf dem Sitz, die nicht in der Sonne mit mackintoshes mit Helmen, etc. warm werden gemietet werden. Das ist alles zusätzlicher Komfort. Fügen Sie diese Erhöhung der Preis ein bisschen, um es zu decken und alle GUS-Kunden sind Sie! Außerdem ist die Buchung der Zahlung per Kreditkarte natürlich ein großes Plus. Eine normale Karte ist nicht genug für alle. 3+ von 5. Nur für den leeren Tank war ein echtes Problem. Wenn das nicht der Fall gewesen wäre, dann 4+. Ich hoffe, es war ein einmaliger Unfall bei Ihnen.

Toll roads, the Bosphorus bridges and the HGS system
Since 2022 Turkey has used only the electronic HGS system on motorways. Cash and cards are no longer accepted at toll points. Every rental car comes with an active HGS sticker on the windscreen — the fee is deducted automatically as you drive through.

The Istanbul bridges
Three Bosphorus bridges (15 Temmuz, Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Yavuz Sultan Selim) charge only when travelling Europe to Asia; the return journey is free. The Osmangazi Bridge and Eurasia Tunnel charge in both directions.

What it costs
Approximate 2026 prices: Eurasia Tunnel around ₺225 daytime, Osmangazi Bridge around ₺795, Istanbul–Ankara about ₺150, Istanbul–Izmir about ₺500. Free alternative routes exist but usually add 30–90 minutes.

Insurance, accidents and crossing borders
Third-party liability is included by law. Basic CDW usually comes with an excess. Around 70% of guests upgrade to Full Coverage for extra peace of mind.

What Super CDW covers
Glass, wheels, rims, theft and zero excess. It doesn’t cover drink-driving, off-road use or unpaid tolls.
What to do after an accident
Call 154 (traffic police) for any damage, no matter how small. A police report is essential for insurance. Don’t move the car until they arrive and inform your supplier straight away.

Crossing the border
Most borders are not permitted. Georgia is sometimes possible with permission; Northern Cyprus occasionally by ferry. Insurance is void at borders with Greece, Bulgaria, Armenia and Iran.

Frequently asked questions
Not with most local Turkish suppliers. They typically accept debit cards for the online booking and allow the balance and deposit to be settled in cash on arrival, in USD or EUR. International chains in Turkey still tend to require a credit card in the main driver's name and rarely accept cash deposits, so it's worth filtering for local suppliers if a credit card isn't an option.
HGS is a fully electronic toll system covering Turkey's motorways, paid bridges and certain tunnels. A chip sticker is already mounted on the windscreen of most hire cars; at toll points you slow down slightly and the charge is deducted automatically. Cash booths no longer exist. Total toll charges are usually invoiced as a single line on the final bill at the end of the rental.
Deposits depend on the car class and the supplier. Economy cars usually start from $100, midsize from $200–500, and minivans up to $500. With several suppliers there is no deposit at all; with others, the deposit is waived when full coverage is taken. Choosing this configuration at the booking stage is more straightforward than trying to negotiate it on collection.
In most cases, no. Cross-border travel from Turkey is not permitted by the majority of suppliers. That includes Greece, Bulgaria, Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria. If your itinerary involves crossing into a neighbouring country, the practical approach is to drop the car on the Turkish side and continue with a separate rental or local transport from the border.
Yes, between major airports and cities — Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, Dalaman, Ankara — most suppliers offer one-way rentals. The relocation fee scales with distance and typically starts from around $200–300. Stock for these journeys runs out faster in the high season, so booking in advance avoids disappointment.
The general limit is 0.5‰. However, if there is any passenger in the vehicle, the limit drops to zero — effectively requiring the driver to be entirely sober. Anything above the limit at the time of an accident voids any insurance policy, including Full coverage and Super coverage, and carries a substantial fine.
Most suppliers require drivers to be at least 22 years old with a minimum of two years' driving experience. Premium and 4x4 categories often start at 25. For drivers under 22 or 23, some suppliers will still arrange the rental but apply a young driver surcharge — typically around $10 per day.
Most European licences are accepted in Turkey on their own. UK government guidance recommends carrying an International Driving Permit alongside the domestic licence as a precaution, though it is not strictly required for short visits. For licences in scripts other than the Latin alphabet, an IDP is sensible.
Don't move the vehicle. Photograph the damage and the wider scene, contact the rental supplier and call 112 if the situation is serious. A police report is needed in Turkey for almost every incident — without it, insurance typically doesn't apply. The supplier will then guide the formal handling and the insurance side from their end.
Often, yes. Many local Turkish suppliers apply a 150–250 km daily mileage cap, with each kilometre over the limit charged separately. For longer routes — the coastal drive from Antalya to Fethiye, or a trip to Cappadocia — choosing an unlimited-mileage tariff at booking is the more practical option. The setting is filterable when comparing cars.
The body, wheels, glass, bumpers, lights and interior are best filmed on a short video. Check the fuel level and the presence of the HGS sticker, the first-aid kit and the warning triangle. Any noted damage should be marked on the contract before driving away. The whole process takes a couple of minutes and removes most disagreements at return.
Generally, yes. Both petrol and diesel typically run noticeably below the prices in Greece, Italy and most of Western Europe — often the difference funds a meaningful share of the trip's driving budget. Diesel is the cheaper option per kilometre in Turkey and is usually preferred for long-distance and mountain routes.
