A hire car works best on routes that link more than one place. Drives along the Mediterranean coast, day trips to Cappadocia or Pamukkale, transfers between Aegean and Mediterranean resorts — on those journeys, your own vehicle is noticeably faster and calmer than coaches, taxis or shared shuttles.
The benefit is most pronounced on longer distances, with children, with luggage or with larger groups. Minivans are a popular choice in Turkey for exactly this reason: two families or a group of friends will often hire one to cover the coast together or reach Cappadocia from the south.

Die 2 Tage der Anmietung vergingen für uns wie im Traum, wir hatten keine Zeit zu verstehen und zu fühlen, was mit uns geschah. Eine wunderschöne Tour durch die Türkei war geplant. Meine Erfahrungen mit der Anmietung eines Autos bei diesem Unternehmen waren im Allgemeinen gemischt. Positiv ist, dass der Standort der Autovermietung außerhalb des Flughafens liegt, aber sie bieten einen Shuttle-Service zur Abholstelle an. Bei dem von mir gebuchten Auto handelte es sich um einen Fiat Aegean Diesel mit 1,6-Motor, der sich in gutem Zustand befand und wenig Kilometer gelaufen hatte. Aber die Politik, das Auto mit leerem Tank auszugeben und zurückzugeben, ist für den Kunden nicht bequem. Es gab mehrere negative Punkte. Einer davon war ein leerer Tank mit "Harnstoff" (Flüssigreagenz), der bei der Übergabe des Fahrzeugs nicht aufgefüllt worden war. Das warf Fragen auf, denn ich hatte den Tank vollgetankt, aber der Harnstoffstand hatte sich nach 1000 km nicht verändert. Auch bei den Versicherungsbedingungen herrschte Verwirrung. Bei der Buchung wählte ich die umfassendste Versicherung, doch bei der Ankunft wurde mir mitgeteilt, dass es sich nicht um eine Vollkaskoversicherung handelte, und man versuchte, mich davon zu überzeugen, dass es sonst für das Unternehmen nicht vertretbar sei, das Auto zu einem solchen Preis zu mieten. Erst auf mein Drängen hin wurde mir die richtige Versicherung ausgehändigt, mit dem Versprechen, dieses Problem mit der Website zu lösen. Bei der Rückgabe des Wagens gab es keine Probleme, und ich wurde prompt zum Flughafen gebracht. Insgesamt hinterließ die Anmietung einen gemischten Eindruck. Ich würde dieses Unternehmen empfehlen, aber man sollte auf die Versicherungsbedingungen und die zusätzlichen Gebühren achten.

Citroen C4 X in der Türkei
Alles in allem: gut. Allerdings brachten sie mir keinen Citroen, sondern einen Opel Crossland. Insgesamt machte das für mich keinen Unterschied. Das Auto war neu und sauber. Hat keine Probleme verursacht. Außer, dass der fast leere Tank bei der Übergabe sehr ungewohnt ist. Es war ein bisschen schwierig, mit der Person, die das Auto gegeben hat, zusammenzukommen. Erstens gab es Zwischenhändler, zweitens sprach die Person kaum Englisch (am Ende habe ich angerufen, damit es schneller ging, sich zu einigen). Der Vertrag ist auf Türkisch, der Mitarbeiter, der das Auto übergab, antwortete auch mit Dolmetscher nicht sehr gut und hatte es eilig - ich habe nie gemerkt, ob meine Bedingungen für die Kaskoversicherung mit dem Auftrag übereinstimmen oder nicht. Zum Auto selbst - ich musste die Räder aufpumpen, zum Glück gibt es eine solche Möglichkeit an Tankstellen. Von unerwarteten Überraschungen - Sommerreifen im Januar (kann man sie auf die Ausstellungsregion abschreiben?), was mich in der Wahl der Reiseziele einschränkte (Kappadokien wurde wegen Schneefalls sofort abgesagt). Ich möchte auch im Voraus wissen, dass man beim Verlassen des Flughafens für das Parken am Flughafen (Antalya) bezahlen muss. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit ist gering, dass die Leute im Moment keine Karte/Lira haben.

Wir waren sehr unzufrieden, nicht so sehr mit dem Auto, sondern mit Herrn Hüseyin, der ein Vertreter der Firma ist, die das Auto vor Ort (Flughafen Izmir) zur Verfügung stellt. Wir sind von Antalya aus geflogen und haben dies bei der Buchung angegeben, einschließlich der Flugnummer. Natürlich kamen wir am Inlandsterminal an. Hüseyin kam, um uns im internationalen Terminal abzuholen. Das Ergebnis: unnötige Verhandlungen und verlorene Zeit. Er brachte uns nicht zum Parkplatz des Vermieters, sondern zu einem Wohnhaus. Auch hatte er kein Terminal für die Zahlung per Bankkarte, obwohl in den Mietbedingungen auf der Website eine solche Möglichkeit war. Dann nahm er von uns extra 10 Euro für die Überfahrt auf mautpflichtigen Autobahnen, wobei er uns erklärte, dass das Auto einen eingebauten Transponder für die automatische Zahlung hat und dass der Betrag davon abgezogen wird und das war's dann auch schon. Es gab keine Informationen über diese Maut auf der Website bei der Buchung. Das Auto war völlig demoliert. Wir haben 26 Fotos von den Schäden gemacht, um den aktuellen Zustand des Autos festzuhalten. Aber es schien zu fahren, und die Zeit war schade, so dass wir beschlossen, die angebotene Kopie zu nehmen. Aber noch am selben Tag bemerkten wir, wie abgewischt das Lenkrad und der Schalthebel waren. Laut Vertrag sollte das Auto im Jahr 2022 hergestellt werden, aber wir nahmen es im Januar 2024. So kann ein Auto nach 2 Jahren Gebrauch nicht aussehen. Wir haben uns das technische Gutachten angesehen, und da steht, dass das Auto nicht 2022, sondern 2018 hergestellt wurde. Es ist also ein anderes Auto als das, das wir bestellt haben, obwohl es das gleiche Modell ist. Der Kilometerstand wurde mit etwa 97000 Kilometern angegeben, aber so ein abgewischtes Lenkrad und ein abgewischter Schalthebel sagten uns, dass das Auto weit über 150000 km gelaufen war. Als wir Hussain darauf ansprachen, sagte er nur, als ob nichts passiert wäre, dass das Auto von 2022 gerade repariert würde und er keine Rabatte für ein älteres und ramponiertes Auto gewähren oder es austauschen könne. Bei normalen Autovermietungen gibt es eine Regel, nach der, wenn das bestellte Auto aus irgendwelchen Gründen nicht verfügbar ist, die Kunden ein ähnliches oder besseres, aber niemals ein schlechteres bekommen, wie wir es bekommen haben. Und Husein hat das nicht im Voraus gesagt, sondern versucht, es zu verbergen. Auch stellten wir mit der Zeit fest, dass die Wischerblätter und die linke Scheibenwaschanlage im Auto nicht funktionierten. Zum Glück konnte wenigstens dies nach einem Gespräch mit Hussein behoben werden, aber dafür mussten wir selbst zu einem bestimmten Autoservice fahren und erneut unsere Urlaubszeit aufwenden. Generell können wir den Umgang mit diesem Autoanbieter (Hussein) und seiner Firma nicht empfehlen.

Im Allgemeinen ist alles gut gelaufen - sie haben mich am Flughafen abgeholt, das Auto war sauber, der Preis entsprach der Vereinbarung, alles wurde schnell unterzeichnet - keine Beschwerden. Bin gerade weggefahren - der Sensor leuchtete auf - bin zur Tankstelle gefahren, habe nachgesehen - tatsächlich war ein Rad deutlich platt.

Anstelle des Renault Clio wurde uns ein Hyundai I20 zur Verfügung gestellt, was nicht kritisch ist. Das Auto ist sauber, pünktlich bereitgestellt. Die Eindrücke vom Service und dem Auto sind sehr positiv. Während des Betriebs gab es keine Probleme.

Each car listing shows the actual vehicle: real photographs, year, condition, reviews from previous clients and the specific terms from that owner. It removes the most common worry — that the car turning up won't quite match the picture.
What's worth knowing before the trip
Turkey works logically as a rental market, but it has a few peculiarities of its own — the toll system, insurance fine print, parking and winter rules. If you're across these before booking, the rest tends to fall into place.
Toll roads and the HGS system
Toll roads, bridges and certain tunnels in Turkey are managed through HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi) — a fully electronic system. A chip sticker is already mounted on the windscreen of nearly every hire car; at toll points, you simply slow down slightly and the charge is deducted automatically. Cash booths and barriers don't exist for this anymore.
"We always run through how HGS charges are calculated when handing over the car, and at what point they appear in the final invoice. That settles most questions before they arise."
The total for tolls is typically added as a single line on the final invoice at the end of the rental. A small administrative handling fee from the supplier is normal practice on the local market.
Insurance — what's included and what isn't
Third Party Liability (TPL) is included in every Turkish rental by law. Basic Comprehensive cover (CDW) is usually included as well, but it carries an excess and has standard exclusions: glass, tyres, wheels, the underside and the interior are typically not covered. For mountain routes and dense city driving, it's worth taking Super coverage (SCDW) or Full coverage (FDW), which closes those gaps.
"Full coverage only works when the rental terms are followed. If the named driver is at the wheel, the route is permitted, and the incident is reported correctly, there are no financial surprises. Where the contract is broken, coverage may apply only partially."
A note on alcohol. The legal limit in Turkey is 0.5‰, but it drops to zero if there is any passenger in the car — meaning the driver effectively has to be entirely sober. Anything above the limit voids any insurance policy, including Full coverage and Super coverage.
Fuel, fines and parking
Both petrol and diesel are common in Turkey. Diesel tends to be cheaper to run and pulls better on long drives and mountain routes, which is why it's frequently chosen for cross-country trips. Petrol stations are open round the clock; major ones take cards, smaller rural stations are often cash-only.
Turkish traffic enforcement is strict — motorways carry plenty of fixed and average-speed cameras. The good news: paying a fine on the spot earns a 25% discount, and paying within 15 days online or through PTT earns a further 25%.

Winter trips and mountain routes
For trips into the eastern provinces or the mountains — Erzurum, Kars, the Taurus range, the ski resorts — winter tyres and overall vehicle setup are worth confirming with the supplier in advance. Winter tyres do most of the work; chains are kept as a backup for heavy snow and difficult sections rather than a substitute for tyres. Cars set up for winter are booked first, so plan ahead.

Driving style in Turkey runs at a faster pace than most European travellers are used to. Local drivers change lanes earlier, signal less consistently and rely on quick reactions from everyone around them. It isn't aggression — it's simply tempo. The first hour or two is best spent driving calmly, holding extra distance and adjusting gradually rather than trying to keep up immediately.

If something goes wrong on the road, it's safer not to step out of the car or attempt to settle the matter on the spot. Turkish road law has tightened in recent years: stepping out and arguing can be classified as aggression, which carries substantial fines and the possibility of temporary licence and vehicle confiscation. Moving to a safe location and contacting the rental supplier is almost always the better course.
For accidents — even a scratch — the rule is consistent: don't move the vehicle, take photographs, contact the rental supplier and call 112 if the situation requires it. A police report is needed in Turkey for almost every incident; without it, insurance generally doesn't apply. Keeping the rental contract within reach is sensible.

Vehicle handover deserves a moment of attention as well. Filming the body, wheels, glass, bumpers and interior at both pick-up and drop-off takes only a few minutes and removes most disagreements about pre-existing damage. It's also worth allowing extra time at return so the inspection doesn't sit awkwardly against a flight check-in.
